A new chapter is being written in the journey of Cassandrine Destima, a young Haitian photographer with boundless creativity.
Selected from over 700 applications from 18 countries, she is now among the 200 photographers chosen to take part in the 4th edition of the African Photography Oscars — a major recognition for the talents of the African continent and its diaspora.
Representing Haiti in this prestigious competition is not just an honor for Cassandrine — it is a mission: to shine a light on her country and elevate the voices of women artists.
Born in Plaisance, in Haiti’s northern department, and raised in Cité Soleil, Cassandrine has brilliantly balanced two vocations: medicine and photography. A final-year medical student at Mont Everest University of Haiti, she also serves as vice president of AFPHA, the very first association of women photographers in Haiti — a role that reflects her commitment to greater representation in the arts.
Her passion for photography was ignited through the “Kamera m chanje vi m” program, initiated by the VIREHA organization. Since then, she has continually impressed with her unique vision. From her photo coverage of the PapJazz festival to various exhibitions and her ongoing collaboration with the show Playlist on Radio Télévision Caraïbes, Cassandrine stands out for her originality and dedication.
With a strong focus on portraiture, her photographic projects blend aesthetics, emotion, and activism. Her acclaimed “Retro” series on social media and her current project “The Queen’s Gambit” reflect her desire to elevate femininity, challenge social norms, and empower women to reclaim their image.
Despite the challenges posed by insecurity and the lack of opportunities for artists in Haiti, Cassandrine continues to create and inspire. She encourages young photographers to persevere: “You have to keep working, keep creating. Originality comes from passion and consistency.”
Today, her selection for the African Photography Oscars marks a pivotal milestone in her career.
Cassandrine Destima embodies a new generation of versatile Haitian artists — passionate, determined, and ready to break barriers. Her journey is a vibrant tribute to art, resilience, and feminine ambition.
