Born in Cap-Haïtien, a commune in Haiti’s northern department, Anie Alerte Joseph is a singer deeply cherished by Haitians. Her songs are on nearly everyone’s lips, and her voice is one of the most exquisite of her generation. It is thanks to her undeniable talent that she has carved out a place for herself in the Haitian music industry. The editorial team at Célébrité Magazine invites you to get to know her in this article.
Raised by her maternal family in the commune of Les Perches, Anie Alerte managed—though not without obstacles—to make a name for herself in the Haitian cultural scene and even beyond its borders. She was born on June 6, 1993, in Cap-Haïtien, to a woman named Anita Joseph.
Raised in a single-parent household, Anie Alerte received a Protestant upbringing — which, according to her, prevented her mother from pursuing a career in music. “My mother sang really well, but because of her father, she couldn’t develop her talent,” she explains.
After completing her classical studies, Anie earned several university diplomas. “I could have become a doctor, but destiny wanted me on stage,” she tells us with a voice full of pride.
First Steps into the Music World
Like many artists in the Haitian music scene, Anie Alerte began her journey in church. The young woman from Cap-Haïtien already found joy in listening to her mother sing at home. She also grew up surrounded by the voices of Jacques Sauveur Jean, Hérold Christophe, and, on the group side, Tabou Combo. She was already staging performances in her mind.
“Listening to my mother, and all the songs that were part of my daily life, I could already see myself on stage, entertaining a crowd. I really wanted to be a singer,” she confides with great joy.
She recalls the experiences that shaped who she is today. “I used to take part in singing contests at my church. That’s when it clicked. I fought to make that part of me known. In fact, it was my biggest dream,” she shares.
In 2008, she participated in the Digicel Stars competition and came in second place, even though she was not yet eighteen. Less than a year later, she represented Haiti’s bicolored flag in another competition in Guadeloupe, called Défi Lycéen. As promised to her loved ones, she won first prize, earning her recognition on Guadeloupean soil.
Achievements and Other Aspects
The singer has several songs to her credit, including numerous collaborations. From “Pi bon zanmi mwen”, the track that helped pave her way, to her latest collaboration with Paul Beaubrun, “Kriye”, Anie Alerte has taken part in many projects such as “Haïti, cœur de femme” and Yole Derose’s “Éritaj.” She has also lent her voice to albums like “All of God” by Shedly Abraham. These experiences helped her get closer to one of her dreams: collaborating with her all-time idol, Amstrong Jeune.
While Anie Alerte Joseph is indeed a singer, her achievements go beyond music. She is also known for her patriotism and bravery. Apart from her musical work, the voice behind “Ou pa t janm renmen m” must be mentioned when speaking of courage and love for country. Who could forget her involvement in the construction of the canal on the Massacre River? This project revealed a different side of Anie Alerte, despite the many challenges she faced. It’s also worth noting that the artist has used her platforms to support victims of the August 14, 2021 earthquake in Les Cayes.
Anie, who portrayed “Défilé la folle” in Éritaj, and her team were attacked in Terrier-Rouge in September 2022, while en route to Fort-Liberté (Northeast Department) as part of a mobile clinic. Members of the delegation, including doctors and artists, were beaten by locals.
She has faced many challenges throughout her journey but chooses to see the glass half full. As she puts it, music is a double-edged sword. “I had plenty of reasons to give up on music, but I still managed to express myself through it, and that has been liberating,” she says joyfully.
Anie sings her life — and she’s not ashamed to say it. She poured her emotions into “Mal”, a music video released a few months after she went through a traumatic experience in her artistic journey. It was not easy, but she says that moment allowed her to discover herself more deeply — emotionally, behaviorally, and beyond.
Upcoming Projects
The mother of three — one biological child and two adopted — is preparing to offer something new to her fans very soon. In fact, the artist’s solo album is on the way, and this time, she is taking care to explore different themes.
“Out of respect for my fans, I’m not singing entirely about my life on this album,” she shares.
Nothing else about the album has been revealed. Neither the title nor the release date is known, but the voice behind “Kenbe m” assures us that it will be available before the end of this year.
